STEM in Panama
STEAM in Panama is an outreach mission started by FTC Team 7159 Robo Ravens and assisted by FRC Team 3128 Aluminum Narwhals and Canyon Crest Academy’s (CCA) Envision Humanities Conservatory. It aims to cultivate knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) in Panama City, Panama. The goal of the program is to inspire students to follow their own FIRST paths, whether that be pursuing a future in STEAM, joining robotics or other team activities, or starting their own FIRST team.

In the fall of 2017, the Aluminum Narwhals, CCA’s Humanities Conservatory, and the Robo Ravens flew down Panama City, Panama to visit the Metropolitan School of Panama and the Magen David Academy. The purpose of this visit was to present STEAM in a fun and interactive environment, using robotics as a means to inspire the students. The CCA students gave demonstrations of basic Java programming and FTC hardware design. We wanted to show them that technology was a living, accessible, and fascinating collaboration.

The MET Jaguars were unable to fly up to compete for last year’s Into Orbit FLL challenge, despite being invited back to compete. However, this year they were able to fly up 2 students, Alec Smith and Joaquin Arteaga, along with a mentor, Lester Orellana. During their trip, they visited CCA’s FTC robotics workshop, where they received an introduction to the various components of FTC in the hopes that they might start a team as they begin to age out of FLL.

Participating Schools

Middle School Team Shadowing
Throughout the season, we welcomed students from our neighboring middle school to attend our weekly team practices and introduce them to the core aspects of FTC. During practice, our members taught these students the basics of goBILDA structure, allowing them to get hands-on with building and even contributing to the robot at times. Other times, our members taught them fundamental CAD techniques using Onshape. We want these students to feel like a part of our team as they continue to learn and grow in their FIRST journey.

General Outreach and Summer Camp
The Robo Ravens have run general outreach events where we have invited members from our community and gave them introductions into STEM and engineering. These outreaches have been a great way for the team to give back to the community
